Hospital day 19
Yep, it's been 19 days. I had a nice conversation with the night nurse late last night and another good conversation with today's nurse. Mily is following commands well and has spent most of today OFF THE VENT! The transition from ventilator to breathing completely without assistance from the machine is a big step. When they tried this before, she tired too easily. Now, she is tolerating it well. It's not uncommon for patients to need to go back on the ventilator at night and then be off of it during the day. That's where Mily is right now. It looks as if her BP is going to start to behave a bit better; I think the docs have found the drug and dose after having to try varied strategies for a spell. Millie has begun to tell Mily (slowly and carefully) what has transpired since Christmas. She was teary, that's about all the details I have. The time of high emotion for Mily has begun. The more she realizes the magnitude of what has happened - the better. What I mean is that the more she shows her understanding of what has happened, the better off her brain made out in getting through this insult. So - we don't want her to be emotional and upset - but we really want her to be emotional and upset - does that make any sense at all? Pray for her strength to continue to build, for her cognition to continue to make itself known, and yes - for her to be really emotional. It's okay - she needs to grasp this event for the life-altering thing it is; if she doesn't it could indicate a level of brain damage (possibly permanent) that we don't want her to have! Functional impairments are one thing to deal with, cognitive impairments (and there are MANY possibilities) are a whole different ball game. It will be some time before the assessments can be made to see where things really are; but I will tell you from my experience that the more wound up and upset and onery a patient was waking up (when they were aware of their surroundings as Mily is), the better they recovered over the longer course. For the time being, she is still being seen daily by both occupational and physical therapy and I recommended that Millie bring her glasses in to see if they help (vision changes are common after stroke, her current glasses may not suit her anymore). Ok, so I just read over what I wrote and just realized that the acute phase of all of this seems to be coming to a close, and the transition into reassessment and rehab is beginning - slowly. That's not to say we won't have two steps back again before another forward, but she has come a very long way these last 19 days. Can someone please post an account of the earthquake in Haiti either here or by email? Did you know she's and earthquake freak/phobe (I say that with undying love)?? She gets earthquake info worldwide to her cell phone by text... I've always thought that was cute. My point is, she is going to want to know not just about the weather, the Packers, and us.....she'll want updates on the world too. What are the top grossing movies? (I've no clue - I am a water polo player and ballerina taxi, I live in my car 6 days a week and have no life) What are the top country songs? Are there any new songs out you know she'll LOVE? Lets review the headlines folks and lovingly fill her in - it'll all be read to her when she's ready. Bring it on. It's easier to leave you all with a wink and a smile tonite ;) B (Bethany)

Mily, I will see you tomorrow!!! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteLove ya,
Kelly
Well B thanks once again for the enlightening information once again. We are so blessed to have your words of wisdom to go on every day! Mily she is one special gal and she is on our side! Yea what a blessing!
ReplyDeleteB says you want earthquake info. Well you know I pay attention to this info also as when I worked for Direct Relief this was part of the job to pay attention to natural disasters worldwide not just in our neck of the woods.
So here is the info that I have for you today, it looks as though somewhere around 50,000 people have parished so far but they are truly a long way from totals as of yet. It was a 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. The area that it has hit is near Port au Prince and a very poor area to begin with. Shades of the earthquake in India a few years ago and the total devastation of that country at the time are very similar to what is going on in Haiti right now.
Direct Relief and the Red Cross among others of course have already started with relief efforts and that will of course continue. I will try to keep you posted if new info arrives.
Love you Mily and have a wonderfully productive day!
Aunt Jodi
Okay Kelly, we will expect a full report!!! : )
ReplyDeleteTell Mily we love her and once again this post has brought a tear of joy to my eyes!!!
Keep up the good work!!
The earthquake in Haiti is a desaster.. . .
So many building have crumbled due to non existant building codes. Releif efforts are being impaired due to the destruction. The town of Port au Prince is in ruin. The people of the town are living on the streets because they are afraid of the after shocks, which there have been many. Out of the 3 million residents, they are reporting that 500,000 may be dead/missing. I did not watch any of the news reports last night because it was too depressing.. . . .

Oh Mily this would be right up your alley! I am surprised that you didn't think about it! The Red Cross has a new way to donate money for the Disaster in Haiti! Texting!!!! Is that not you?? I swear! You text to 90999 and then write Haiti in the text, it automatically donates $10 to the relief efforts in Haiti, were you channeling this idea cuz I just know that you had to have somethig to do with that! LOL Love you, Aunt Jodi
ReplyDeleteOk Mils,
ReplyDeleteSeems as if the task of updating you has fallen to me...and its not something I mind in the least!! We will start with football! My favorite subject of course. I already told you that your Packers lost last week in OT and so with great sadness (cough, cough, ahem...sorry that stuck in my throat...lol) they do not move forward in the playoffs. So who did make it past last week you ask? Well, the Chargers take on the NY Jets this week in San Diego. Of course, everyone in MY neighborhood is going for the Chargers....bandwagon people they are ha ha! The Cowboys will take on the Vikings in Minnesota (I take the Cowboys...for ya know they already beat the SAINTS on home turf), speaking of the Saints, they will take on the Cardinals in New Orleans. I'm going for Brees to step up and pull this one out! Last but not least, the Ravens will take on the Colts! Who wins that is anyones guess. On to TV... AMERICAN IDOL IS BACK!!! Simon Cowell announced his departure after this season so who replaces him is the big talk in TV right now! Rumor has it that FOX is going after Elton John...I know weird huh? Also, Conan was ousted by NBC cause Jay man wanted the Tonight show back! That has also been a water cooler discussion these days! Seems Jay man is the butt of lots of angry jokes and jabs these days as people don't think NBC was fair to Conan! Ok...now movie talk! Your man Denzel has a movie opening today called the Book of Eli...looks REALLY good! John and I might see it this weekend so I will let you know! New Moon is still doing great as is Avatar. I think Avatar is still in the #1 spot for Box Office earnings as of right now but things may change this weekend. Alot of good stuff opening. Jackie Chan also has a comedy due out today which you would probably get a crack up out of seeing! I will close with the biggest news of the week and most devastating...Haiti suffered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake this week and it has reduced more than half of the island to rubble. Relief efforts are underway but difficult due to the destruction of the ship ports and partial destruction of the airports. Humanitarian aid is reaching there, lots of people still trapped in the rubble and more than 50,000 are presumed dead. If you could see the pics you would be amazed! You probably got a text alert on your phone when it happened.... In my world, I'm ticked at Jay (he ripped up his report card and John never saw it), I decided I don't really care about his life anymore, let him mess it up not my problem. Makenna did awesome in school...got a 3.4 GPA last semester and has a test in Social Studies today. She also has to do a project on cells which should be pretty easy for us considering my career...lol! Kristen is in NV visiting her mom...yes you heard that right! She is almost done with her makeup artistry program..only a few months left. I'm all about work, and same old stuff we always talk about. Now, before this email goes on forever, I wanted to say ITS ABOUT TIME YOU LISTENED TO ME! I told you your rest time was over and you needed to get to work on getting out of there and you actually listened! YEAH!!! I will come see you soon my friend... I love you and miss you and Thank God every day you are in my life even far away! So many people have come together to pray for you and support you that you would be humbled and embarassed by all the attention. I will close this email now as I think for the most part I have you caught up on the latest in life for this week. I will write again very soon!
Love you,
Lisa
Mily - Behtany asked someone to post a report about the earthquake in Haiti for you. I want you to know that the day that it happened - I envisioned you waking up, asking for your first responders badge and bag - and to say - "I'm off to save some lives". This is what they've said about the people of Haiti - the words make me think about you:
ReplyDeleteThey're heroic about this; they haven't given up, and there's certainly tangible hope. I think that grows a little bit every day,"
Magnitude 7.0 - HAITI REGION
2010 January 12 21:53:10 UTC
Severe damage and casualties in the Port-au-Prince area. Felt throughout Haiti and the Dominican Republic, in Turks and Caicos Islands, southeastern Cuba, eastern Jamaica, in parts of Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, and as far as Tampa, Florida and Caracas, Venezuela.
Aid has trickled into Port-au-Prince, where impassable roads, damaged docks and clogged airstrips slowed the arrival of critically needed assistance.
"We're working feverishly and aggressively to support and provide life-sustaining capability to the citizens of Haiti," U.S. Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser told reporters. "They've suffered a great deal."
On Friday morning, the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived in Haiti, said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The carrier has a significant capacity to deliver disaster-relief supplies, with 19 helicopters, 51 hospital beds, three operating rooms and the ability to produce hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per day.
Within four days, 700 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne will be in the quake zone. By next Tuesday, three more ships carrying 2,200 Marines and heavy equipment will join them. By Saturday, about 5,000 to 6,000 men and women dedicated to supporting the relief effort will be in Haiti.
And later next week, the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship with a crew of 64 and 560 hospital personnel, is to arrive.
U.S. flights into Port-au-Prince's airport were periodically grounded Thursday because ramp space was too crowded and fuel was in short supply.
"The Port-au-Prince airport is going to be overloaded [with] supplies, and there's going to be no way to distribute it, because the roads are blocked," he said, calling for heavy machinery to move the debris.
Cuba is allowing the United States to use its airspace to fly medical evacuation flights. This agreement will allow Americans to fly earthquake victims directly from Haiti to the U.S. and reduce the flight time.
While the situation on the streets is critical, Dave Toycen of World Vision Canada said he sees courage and generosity amid the desperation. "We see people sharing things. You see people helping others in the streets.
Yes young lady you have been through the biggest earthquake of your life, and we respect you in your heroic recovery. I'm still waiting for text message from you....
Hi Mily
ReplyDeleteThinking of you :)
If I get deployed to the victims of the earthquake as a rescue or recovery mission I will bring your energy with me as I did in the past. When you get better we need to get you hooked up to one of the National Disaster Teams-we could use you!!!!!

Miss You

Mils, please know you are on everyone's prayer chain. I ask everyone I know to add your name. The power of prayer is awesome. We in San Diego are on pins and needles for Sunday. We have been down this road and really would like to get past the Jets. There is no turning back - win! We have not seen any movies lately so can not report to you in that area. Some coming out look very good though. I love Denzel and he looks pretty good in his new action movie. We are celebrating Rebecca's birthday finally on Saturday. Justin got a new job about 10 days ago and goes to training near San Francisco about three days a week. I will fill you in after this weekend. He is very excited about it. And Annie loves teaching. You know she would be so good teaching science to the elementary kids. Their girls are growing like weeds and will soon start dance classes. Dave & I are really well and we look forward to you being back on Facebook with your one sentence statements. Love that! Sending all our love. You have some very awesome friends who have kept us all updated via this blog. I want to thank them as well. Hugs to you Mily, and to Dan & Ryan. Aunt Vicki
