The Good, the bad and the ugly...ok no ugly

Ok fine, no bad either - really! I just got off the phone with Millie.... all I can say is WOW! Mily CAN see out of her right eye and is beginning to open it just a little on her own. :) She watched part of an Indiana Jones movie - a sign that she can hold attention for some period of time - another big milestone for a patient post neuro injury. I think she has an ICU psychosis (it's a terrible name); it just means she's has lost her sense of when day is day and night is night because hospitals always have the lights on - how could one possibly know what time or day it is?? I urged Millie to open the drapes during the day - her room has a nice window that's next to her bed - and have the staff be thoughtful about using too much light at night. This will help her circadian rhythm reset and will decrease the agitation she's experiencing as well. She is communicating better, but no attempts at speech yet. She is showing awareness of others' needs by doing things like covering her mom with a blanket they were sharing :)) I'm so so so happy with this progress, I hardly have words. Another really good thing is that she is trying to get up. Now, that's a potential bad also because she could really hurt herself if she managed to wiggle out of bed alone. Anyway, she pushed her left leg with her right out of bed, then swung her right arm over to the left side of the bed and was going for the handrail to pull herself up to sit. Now, this is great - but as a nurse it freaks me out - the risk for injury is HUGE! Please pray for her to stay safe while she continues to heal and maybe a little prayer for me not to have a panic attack worrying about what might happen (I've said before I know too much and worry too much). She is in room 516 on the 5th floor of the hospital and would LOVE cards, mylar balloons (latex balloons aren't allowed) and more emails of course. The hospital will allow her to have flowers.....however - Mily has a tracheostomy. It is an open tube that extends into her lungs and does not close off. Flowers are gorgeous, but can come with itty bitty bugs we can't see and can give off pollens. Either one of these in a trach = big ick = possible pneumonia = longer hospital stay and unnecessary complication for Mily. That's my soapbox item - I'm done. She can have all the flowers she wants a little later please. She is coping well, less emotional, more lucid little by little. <3 B

  1. oh wow, i do believe the day I prayed for is here. Mily is BACK...as evidenced by the fact she tried to comfort her mother with a blanket. That's our girl! Yes?? Thank you, God. We are grateful for the miracle and answered prayer. Thank you, Beth, for the updates. Thank you, Karleen and Melissa and Kari. You girls are The Sisterhood. My heart is with you. much love, MMM

Ok Mils there you are!! I knew you weren't done with us yet!! Keep up the good work, but you know better than to try to get up on your own, (had to put a little mothering in there) So before your big moves without help, why don't you have someone bring in a laptop for you so that you can do some web surfing instead of floor surfing. See if you can type, that would make you happy to know that your texting and typing skills have not been harmed much. I know what a happy girl that would make you! LOL
You might even do a farmville or Yoville as that would take hand/eye coordination and would be good practice for you. I am so happy that you have been able to open your eye just a little and that you can see out of it! Another big ol Woo Hoo!! I am sending your way.
They have finally started to get the relief into Haiti, of course you know how that goes, slow enough to make the people on the ground po'd but fast enough that you see many miracles such as yourself young lady!!
So that is my update for this a.m. looking forward to reading more wonderful news about you and your recovery soon! Love you, Aunt Jodi

  4. Mils,

Well when I said to get a move on I didn't mean literally...stop trying to give Beth a panic attack! LOL! I have some updates for you...my Cowboys lost to Brett Favre (UGH) and it was pretty bad! The Jets beat the Chargers (WOO HOO) and the Colts beat the Ravens. Saints dominated the Cardinals and so the finals look like this... The Saints take on the Vikings and the Colts take on the Jets! I'm going for the Saints all the way! Go Drew! Makenna had soccer Sunday and Monday...she played outstanding and amazing (and I'm not just saying that cause she is my daughter). She blocked some amazing shots on goal and her team ended up winning both scrimmages Sunday and then the one yesterday went to penalty kicks. She outlasted and outplayed the other keeper and stopped more shots for her team to win on penalty kicks! Wow it was exciting! One of these days you will have to see her play - you would be so proud! John and I saw the Denzel movie this weekend...its called The Book of Eli. Have to say, I wasn't a fan of the movie. It was very slow, kind of weird, and very bloody! BLAH! Save your money and see it on video. Makenna saw The Lovely Bones but I couldn't tell you what its about cause I haven't a clue...she said it was really good though! Avatar is still selling out and making record money so good thing you already saw it! Thats about all for the update right now...keep working those muscles and don't give us heart attacks in the meantime! Love you and miss you!

    Love,
    Lisa
